What to put on the page

Keep it short and plain: where the matter stands in two sentences, the next three steps with dates, what you need from the client, and links to documents they should see. Update it when something changes and tell the client you have done so. Avoid linking whole databases; copy summarised text across, because a linked view can reveal more than you intended when someone changes a filter.

A worked example

A conveyancing client wants to know where things stand. You create a page titled with the client name and property address, linked to the matter. It holds a two-sentence status, a table of next steps with dates and who is responsible, and a list of documents the client needs to supply. You invite the client as a guest with comment access to that page only, open the page in a private window as a check, and message them through your usual secure channel to say it is live. When the survey arrives, you update the status line and the next-steps table.

What this approach does not do

• It does not provide secure messaging; use your usual channel for confidential exchanges.
• It does not take payments or collect e-signatures.
• It does not apply your branding or a custom domain.
• It does not notify the client by itself in a way you control; tell them when you update.
• It cannot guarantee that a guest will not forward what they see.
