# A Today view in Notion: your daily legal action list

The Today view is a filtered view of the MatterOS Actions database showing what is overdue or due today, assigned to you, ranked by consequence if missed. You build it once with Notion filters and open it each morning. It is a view over your data, not a separate inbox, and it stays accurate only if you capture actions as they arise.

## Key takeaways

- Filter: owner is me, status not done, due date on or before today.
- Sort by consequence if missed, then due date.
- Open it first thing; close or reschedule each overdue item.
- It does not pull in email or calendar items unless you add them.

## How to build the view

1. Open Actions: Add a new Table or Board view called Today.
2. Filter by owner: Set owner to the current user (Me).
3. Filter by status and date: Status is not Done and due date is on or before today.
4. Sort: Consequence if missed first, then due date.
5. Pin it: Add it to your sidebar or home page.

## A five-minute morning routine

- Clear overdue first.
- Do court or statutory items before anything else.
- Reschedule only with a reason noted.
- Triage new email onto matters, then re-check the list.
- Block time for the top three.

## Inbox, in this context

Treat the inbox as a place items pass through. Anything needing action becomes an action on a matter; then it shows up in Today. This is manual, by design.

## Limits

The view does not reorder itself by judgement, send a morning digest, or know about commitments you have not recorded.

## Tuning the view

Add a second view called This week for planning and a third called Waiting for actions you are chasing. Hide properties you do not need so each row fits on one line. If you share a calendar with colleagues, show due dates there too, but keep the Today list personal so it stays short enough to finish.

## A worked example

It is 8:30. The Today view shows four rows: a filing due today (court), a reply owed to a client (client), a draft to review (internal) and a task from last Friday that slipped. You do the filing first. You move the client reply to this afternoon and note why. You see the slipped task, decide it is still needed, and give it a new date with a reason in the comment. Then you process the inbox: two emails each become an action on a matter, one is filed as correspondence, one is deleted. Five minutes, and the list is true again.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Keeping actions in the inbox and the Today list at once, so neither is trusted.
- Using Today for everything; keep it to what you will actually do today.
- Rescheduling without a reason, which turns the view into a place where deadlines go to drift.
- Skipping capture on busy days, which is exactly when the list matters.

## FAQ

### Does MatterOS include a Today view?

You build it with a filter in a few minutes; the Actions fields support it.

### Can it email me a daily summary?

Not by itself; Notion automations or reminders may help depending on plan.

### How do I include calendar events?

Use Notion Calendar alongside the view.

### What if an action has no date?

It will not appear; undated actions should be fixed.

### Can I see colleagues' actions?

Yes, with a separate view filtered by another owner. Keep your own Today view personal.

### Does it replace my email inbox?

No. Email stays in your mail client; Today only shows actions you have recorded on matters.
