# Tracking discovery in Notion with the Evidence register

MatterOS can track discovery in Notion: log each request and response as an Action with a deadline, log each document in the Evidence register with its classification and review status, and link both to the matter. It is a tracker, not an e-discovery platform, and it does not process or search large document volumes.

## Key takeaways

- Requests and response deadlines are Actions; documents are Evidence rows. Both link to the matter.
- Review status shows what has been reviewed, what is outstanding and what is missing.
- It suits small document sets; large productions need dedicated e-discovery software.
- Discovery or disclosure rules differ by court and country, so take deadlines from the applicable rules.

## A simple discovery set-up

1. Create actions for the process: Add an Action for each step: request sent, response due, objections, supplementary list. Include the date you calculated from the rules.
2. Log documents as Evidence: One row per document or document group, linked to the matter.
3. Tag by issue: Tags such as issue, witness or party make it possible to filter the register later.
4. Track review status: Use the status property to see what remains unreviewed.
5. Record gaps: Add a row or note for documents you expect to exist but have not received.

## Useful views

- Unreviewed documents for this matter.
- Documents tagged for a particular issue.
- Actions with a response deadline in the next 14 days.
- Documents classified as privileged or sensitive, for a second look before anything leaves the firm.

These are filtered views of the same databases, so creating them takes minutes in Notion.

## Where this stops

Not an e-discovery platform: MatterOS does not collect, de-duplicate, index, redact, run technology-assisted review or generate productions. If a matter has thousands of documents, use dedicated software and record the outcome here.

The template also does not calculate court deadlines. Work them out from the rules in your jurisdiction and enter the result, together with the rule you relied on.

## AI and discovery material

Be cautious about pasting disclosure material into any AI tool. Consider confidentiality, privilege and your professional obligations first. Our approach is that AI reads what you choose to give it and you decide.
