# A manual conflict check routine in Notion

MatterOS has no automated conflicts engine. You can run a manual routine by searching the Clients and Matters databases, including parties and related names, before opening a new matter, and by recording the search result on the matter. This supports your firm's process; it does not replace formal conflict checking.

## Key takeaways

- The template stores clients, matters and parties you enter. It only knows what you put in.
- Search names, aliases and related parties before opening the matter, and record the date and result.
- A clear search in Notion does not mean there is no conflict.
- Your regulator's rules and any firm conflict system take priority.

## The routine

1. List the names: Prospective client, other side, related companies, individuals, and any known aliases.
2. Search Clients: Use Notion search or a filtered view across each name.
3. Search Matters: Check party fields, notes and titles for the same names.
4. Check other records: Look at your email, accounting system or any dedicated conflict database too.
5. Record the outcome: Add a note on the new matter: who searched, when, which names, and the result.
6. Escalate doubts: If anything looks close, ask the responsible lawyer before accepting instructions.

## Make future searches easier

- Record other parties on each matter as consistent, separate entries rather than only in free text.
- Keep closed matters in the database instead of deleting them.
- Add an aliases or former names field where useful.
- Use a database template for new matters that includes a Conflict check done property.

Notion search depends on the access of the person searching, so run it from an account that can see all matters.

## What this routine cannot do

Not a conflict system: It does not do fuzzy name matching, link entities, search outside your workspace or keep a regulated record. Use whatever your firm or regulator requires. Not legal advice. Check the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.

## Where this fits

A tidy Matters hub makes this search faster, which is a side benefit of the Matter Method rather than a feature built for conflicts.
