# Comments and @mentions on legal matters in Notion

Comments, @mentions and reminders in MatterOS are Notion's own features. Put discussion on the matter page or the specific action, @mention the person you need, and add a reminder date. The template provides the pages to comment on; Notion provides the notifications.

## Key takeaways

- Comment on the matter, action or evidence row itself so the discussion stays with the work.
- @mention a person to notify them; mention a page to link related work.
- Reminders on dates are not a substitute for a firm's formal deadline system.
- Notifications and permissions are managed in Notion, not by the template.

## Where to use each feature

| Need | Notion feature | Where in MatterOS |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Ask a colleague a question | Comment with @mention | On the matter page or the action |
| Flag a document for review | @mention on an Evidence row | Evidence register |
| Link two matters | @mention a page | Matter notes |
| Get nudged on a date | Reminder in a date property or comment | Actions |

## A comment routine that keeps the record clean

1. Comment on the object the question is about, not in a chat thread nobody will find later.
2. Start with the @mention and the ask: who, what, by when.
3. When the answer changes the plan, update the matter or action and resolve the comment.
4. At matter close, skim the resolved comments for anything worth saving to Research.

A good test is the one the Matter Method gives for the Team piece: could someone else carry this matter from what is on the page?

## Handover and delegation

When you delegate, assign the Action to the person, @mention them in a comment with the context, and add a handover note on the matter. Our delegation guide goes through the pattern.

## Limits to know

Notion notifications are not an audit trail, and comment history is not a reliable record of advice given. MatterOS adds no notification rules of its own. Guests see comments only if your sharing settings allow it, so check before using comments with clients.

## FAQ

### Does MatterOS have its own commenting?

No. It uses Notion's comments and @mentions on its pages.

### Can I @mention a client?

Only if they are a Notion user with access to the page. Review what a guest can see first.

### Are reminders reliable for court deadlines?

Treat them as a convenience. Use your firm's formal deadline process as well.

### Do comments show up on the dashboard?

No. The dashboard shows database views, not comment threads.
