# Audit trail in Notion: audit log vs page history for lawyers

MatterOS has no audit log of its own. An audit trail comes from Notion: its audit log is an Enterprise-plan feature, while page history on other plans shows earlier versions of a page for a limited time depending on plan. For key decisions, keep a dated note on the matter regardless of plan.

## Key takeaways

- The template records no user activity by itself.
- Notion's audit log is an Enterprise feature; check current plan details.
- Page history is available on other plans, with retention that varies by plan.
- A dated decision note on the matter is the cheapest audit trail.

## What does Notion provide?

| Capability | Where |
| --- | --- |
| Workspace audit log of activity | Enterprise plan |
| Page history and restore | Available across plans, with retention depending on plan |
| Created by / last edited by properties | Any database; add them as properties |

Check Notion's pricing and help pages for current limits before relying on any of these.

## How to build a lightweight trail

1. Add Created time and Last edited by: Use these built-in property types on key databases.
2. Log decisions: Add a dated note when a deadline moves, a position changes or advice is given.
3. Export periodically: Keep a dated export for matters with record-keeping duties.
4. Restrict editing: Fewer editors, fewer unexplained changes.

## Who needs a real audit log?

Firms with regulatory, client-contract or insurer requirements to evidence who accessed or changed records should confirm whether Notion's plans meet them, or use a system built for that. MatterOS cannot supply it.

## A manual decision log

Add a short Decisions section to each matter with a date, who decided, what and why. Four lines per entry is enough. This captures what an audit log never would: the reasoning. It also helps supervising lawyers, insurers and successors understand a matter without reconstructing it from page versions.

## Page history versus audit log

| Question | Page history | Audit log |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What was this page like last month? | Yes, within retention | Not its purpose |
| Who opened or exported content? | No | Enterprise plan only; check scope |
| Why was a change made? | No | No |
| Is it a regulated record? | Do not assume so | Confirm with your regulator or insurer |

The last two rows matter most. Neither tool records reasoning, which is why a decision note on the matter is worth writing whatever your plan.

## A worked example

A hearing date moves. In the Actions database you change the due date. In the Decisions section of the matter you add a dated entry: who learned of the change, from what source, and who was told. Months later, if someone asks why a filing happened when it did, the answer is on the matter. Page history can show that the date property changed; only your note says why.

### Can I see earlier versions of a page?

Yes, through Notion's page history, subject to plan retention.

### Is page history a compliance record?

Do not assume so; check your requirements.
